Aladdin was the third
movie in the three-movie deal Alan Menken and Howard Ashman were
contracted to.
Originally, Aladdin was
supposed to have been produced before Beauty and the
Beast, but was pushed back behind BatB when production
slowed too much.
An original score was completed,
but as the writers decided to make changes in the story, the
score was *completely* re-done. Only 'Friend Like Me' and the
essentials of 'Arabian Nights' were preserved in the final
draft.
In the earlier drafts, Aladdin
was supposed to have a mother in the movie, but eventually the
writers took her out of the story when her role became less
important.
If you look carefully at the
pyramid of miniature animal figurines that the Sultan is
building, you will see one of the Beast from BatB.
The two men whose shoulders
Aladdin looks over when Prince Achmed parades through Agrabah are
actually caricatures of directors and producers John Musker and
Ron Clements, and they also provided their voices.
